Perfect Plants For Spring

Posted: April 28, 2015

To me, nothing signals the arrival of Spring quite like the explosion of colour that flowers and flowering trees provide. For the past 7 years I’ve lived by the beach so my main excitement about the arrival of warmer weather all revolved around getting to hang out on the beach more and frolic in the sea. But this year is a bit different. We’ve just moved into a house with a garden and I’ve suddenly found myself noticing all the beautiful trees and flowers that everyone has in their gardens and wishing that I could have them too. Our garden was an overgrown mess, which is kind of nice because it’s means that we’ve been able to strip it back to the bare bones and I can start from scratch planning where I want things to be planted. It’s going to be hard work and a bit of a waiting game but I know in 5 or so years time, I’ll be able to sit back and relax in a comfy chair on the patio with a cup of Clipper green tea with Echinacea and admire my rainbow garden!

Magnolia

There was a magnolia tree in the car park at our block of flats and every year, when it started to flower in late March/April it always signaled to me the official start of Spring. It’s a shame though as the flowers only last a week or two before sadly wilting away to leaves.

Camellia

I’ve noticed lots of pops of these beautiful bright coloured flowering trees around recently. I thought they were roses at first but then I saw one up close. They’re a bit like a mix between a peony, a rose and a hibiscus and come in an amazing array of reds and pinks.

Helleborus

I spotted one of these incredible plants outside my son’s nursery last week and quickly snapped a picture for so I could ask Instagram what it was. I’d never seen these flowers before and there’s just something about the way these flowers cluster together and then the way their heads sag so solemnly that I instantly fell in love with them. The flowers themselves come covered in stunning delicate patterns and this particular one was a beautiful dusky shade of violet.

Cherry Blossom

Who doesn’t love a good blossom? Those big, heavy bursts of pink that make you feel like you’ve wondered into a candy floss-filled Katy Perry video. I dare you to Google ‘cherry blossom’ and not be awe-struck at the images you get back.
