On Tuesday the 11th of June we invited London to join us for a tea break at Boxpark in Shoreditch to celebrate 25 years of Fairtrade and launch our #AcTEAvism campaign. We were joined by incredible speakers from Broadcaster and activist Laura Whitmore to Mike Gidney, the CEO of Fairtrade talking all things sustainability.
Estates certified under the Fairtrade Hired Labour Standard must ensure that: ‘The company sets wages for workers and other conditions of employment according to legal or Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) regulations where they exist, or at regional average wages or at official minimum wages for similar occupations; whichever is the highest, with the intention of continually increasing salaries.’
The role of women in tea production, primarily as pluckers, is crucial. Women make up a core part of the labour force at Welbeck, Dunsandle and United Nilgiri. Empowerment is at the heart of Fairtrade, regardless of gender. But gender inequality remains an issue across the globe, with a number of barriers facing women.
Access to affordable, local and effective healthcare can’t be taken for granted. The Fairtrade Premium Committees at Dunsandle, Welbeck and United Nilgiri have all chosen to invest their Fairtrade Premium in a wide variety of healthcare projects.
Creating opportunities and providing a bright future for the children of the tea workers is of utmost importance to the communities of Welbeck, Dunsandle and United Nilgiri. That’s why the Fairtrade Premium Committees and company management have invested so much in education.
